- Prologue
He was a simple Agori, Varonis; he lived a simple life, had a simple job, nothing complex about it at all. He was an assistant to the Great Beings, one of those little guys who ran around, doing everything their master said or asked. Some Agori were jealous of his job; while others were laborers, Varonis was able to not only witness, but take part in, some of the greatest inventions and experiments the world of Spherus Magna had ever seen. Varonis liked his job. Normally nothing was too hard; he lifted crates, cleaned floors, wrote down notes for his masters, anything they needed, he was willing to provide.
He would call himself trusted, perhaps even liked, among the Great Beings. Many of them enjoyed his company, and believed he was very intelligent and quick with solutions. Of course, he was no scientist, and he left the big thinking to the Great Beings; he had seen them do incredible things, levitate objects, create grand machines that could lift whole buildings; it was very likely that they were the most intelligent beings on the entire planet.
The Agori hefted a crate, carrying it out of the room he had previously stood in; he walked down a rather long hallway, with doors on either side of it, noises coming from the rooms behind them. The floor was white, marble, smoother than anything the average Agori could produce with his own two hands. Varonis made sure to keep a steady pace and to plant his feet firmly upon the marble before taking another step, as he could easily slip if he did not. He arrived at the end of the hallway to two large marble doors with large golden handles to pull or push them open; Varonis decided to push them open with the crate he held, and slowly, the doors that were easily ten times his size or more smoothly swung open.
Varonis slightly smiled at the sight of the room he stood before. It was the meeting room of the Great Beings, a wondrous sight, with beautiful carvings lining the walls, most depicting past creations of the Great Beings. Eight large Columns held the large, ornate ceiling in place; the ceiling was domed, with a very large mural that showed the Great Beings arriving upon Spherus Magna, and how they brought the civilization there to a greater potential. Varonis walked over to an area where crates were piled up and set his down on top of another, and with a sigh, he turned around to see the giant doors of the chamber opening once again.
Two beings walked into the chamber, tall and strong, two Great Beings. One was named Invidior, rather thin, and smaller than the other, whose name was Osavus. The first thing Varonis noticed about them was that they were both yelling. Not wanting to be a victim of their wrath, he hid behind the crates quickly, hoping to hide out until they left. He heard them continue bickering and so, having nothing better to do as he crouched behind the crates, decided to listen to their conversation. They both sounded angry, and both had raised tones. "Invidior! Do not speak of our Elder in that manner. If anyone else heard you they would have thrown you right from the Tower!" Osavus said angrily. His brother sighed, wiping his forehead clear of sweat. "Our Elder is an old hag, and he had absolutely no right to remove me from the project! I was doing fine, and I had solved our largest problem! If I'm not reinstated into the project, then I will personally end it by any means necessary," Invidior said with a tone as harsh as an ocean storm.
Varonis knew what they spoke of; a gigantic mechanical being, millions of feet tall, limbs the size of entire villages, a torso the size of mountains, if one were to see it, they would be perplexed, and amazed at the same time, Varonis was confounded the first time he saw it, and even though it was only the creation's leg, it was still large enough to cause an effect on him.
Osavus sighed, "Brother, there is no need to be so angry. Our Elder is simply making the best choice for everyone, especially you. He does not think you are ready yet for such a large and grand experiment." he said, placing a hand on Invidior's shoulder. But the younger Great Being refused to calm himself. "No, there is a need to be angry. I am fully capable of even RUNNING the project, but that old fool refuses to see my way!" he yelled, and Osavus sighed again. "I do not hate our Elder, but I must agree with you. Your punishment was harsh, and uncalled for; I do not even see reason in it," he said, and Varonis watched as Invidior grinned to himself; perhaps he had broken through to Osavus after all.
"I built the stabilizers, and we could work inside the robot again; we could build from the inside without problems due to gravity! All that work just to be thrown out again... just because I wasn't ready for it," Invidior said, angry beyond comprehension. He had personalized the project, and had been prepared to spend every waking moment to see the creation walk, or get up even, and for it to become the greatest thing that anyone had ever created.
Osavus understood his anger, he too, had been denied his destiny, had been denied greatness, simply because he was 'too young', or 'not ready'. He knew fully well what Invidior was going through. "Invidior, I must tell you something, The Elder, and the high council, have decided to keep you out of the project permanently," he said, mentally bracing himself for the torrent of fury that would now erupt from Invidior. As he waited for the explosion, he realized that Invidior's lips were curling, slowly, into a... a smile, of all things.
"Perfect." Osavus was confused. With a raised eyebrow, he spoke, "Excuse me? What's so perfect about that? Just a second ago you were in a fury; why are you suddenly so calm?" he asked the younger Great Being, who simply continued to smile. "I believe I am done with the project, in fact... I am done with the Great Beings entirely," he said, and Osavus took a small step back. "What? Have you been driven to madness? Over what, a single project?" Osavus asked, beginning to get angry. Invidior shook his head, and then told Osavus his real plan, "Osavus, do you agree with the project?" he asked, and Osavus slowly shook his head no. "Even though some call this our Golden Age, we still do not have the time to waste on a project as large as this one," Osavus said.
Invidior smiled evilly, "Then aid me, my brother, in destroying it, putting it out of commission, stopping it," he said, and Osavus sighed, turning away to think. "Invidior, I am in disagreement with the project, but not to the point of wanting to cause harm to people, especially just to end it..." he said, trailing off. Invidior lost his grin, and spoke again, "Osavus, please, help me, this project is nothing but a waste, and a danger to everyone on Spherus Magna. We must destroy it before we lose control, and innocent lives end up getting destroyed." Invidior said, attempting to put on a more noble look on the destruction of the robot.
Osavus sighed deeply; he seemed to be doing that a lot lately. He turned toward Invidior. "As long as we don't hurt anyone. I don't want to get my hands anymore dirty than they will be," he said, and then he confirmed his agreement with Invidior, "Yes, Invidior, I will aid you in this task, but only for the safety of the people," he said, and Invidior smiled, nodding, "Exactly, it is more a danger than a protection." Varonis heard the two Great Beings leave the room.
After he was certain that nobody else was in the room, he got out from his hiding spot, feeling his now-cramped muscles protest at the sudden movement, and stretched. The Agori thought about what he had just learned. He wondered why was he, of all people, chosen to know this information? Had he simply been in the right place at the right time, or was this occurring throughout the Great Beings' society? He could not answer any of those questions; all he could do was leave the room, and slowly plot his next move.
