Metru Nui
History
The island of Metru Nui was constructed with help from Helryx in the Silver Sea above the core processor of the Great Spirit robot. It was inhabited by Matoran alone, and was only visited by a Toa team to imprison the Kanohi Dragon. 79,000 years ago, Ta-Metru and Po-Metru started a civil war in Metru Nui. The Matoran stopped working and Mata Nui’s health began to deteriorate. Teridax ended the war by sealing armies in the Archives and loosing Rahi on them in a massacre. The war was ended, and Teridax was assigned as the region’s Makuta, but was never fully trusted.
Turaga Dume rose to power, and Vahki law enforcers were created to keep peace. 4,000 years ago, Dark Hunters freed the Kanohi Dragon, and the Toa Mangai came to the city and defeated the dragon. Lhikan decided to keep the Toa Mangai in the city. The Dark Hunters later attack Metru Nui, but Toa Naho contacted other Toa to help defend Metru Nui. The Toa won with Lhikan using the betrayal of Nidhiki to ambush the Dark Hunters. The Rahaga also hid in the sewers of Metru Nui.
Teridax abducted Dume and masqueraded as him, letting Nidhiki and Krekka into the city and having Eliminator kill all the Mangai save Lhikan. The Morbuzakh was also loosed on the city, and Teridax asked Vakama to make a Mask of Time. Lhikan brought the Toa Metru into being before his capture. The Metru defeated the Morbuzakh, but were branded traitors by ‘Dume’. The Vahki and Dark Hunters hunted the Metru, and Teridax had the Vahki load Matoran in Matoran Spheres. The Metru confronted Teridax with Vakama having made the Mask of Time, the Kanohi Vahi.
At this time, Mata Nui crashed into Aqua Magna and fell asleep, severely damaging Metru Nui. Teridax was imprisoned in a Toa Seal and Lhikan killed, with the Metru discovering the terra-formed island of Mata Nui. Teridax mentally contacted Sidorak, who led his Visorak armies into Metru Nui. When the Metru returned, they were mutated to Toa Hordika and joined with the Rahaga. The Hordika avoided Visorak and scouted for parts to build Airships to ferry the Matoran trapped in spheres.
Vakama decided to defect to join Roodaka and the Visorak and become a general, capturing the Rahaga. The Hordika storm the Coliseum and attack, with the powerful Rahi Keetongu. Keetongu kills Sidorak as Matau convinces Vakama to abandon the Visorak. The Hordika attack Roodaka, but hit a shard of Teridax’s Toa Seal, freeing him. Keetongu changes the Hordika back to the Metru, and the Matoran are ferried to Mata Nui. The Rahaga fought off an invasion by Visorak arriving five hundred years later, and Norik was menaced by Dweller who had been hiding in Metru Nui for years on the Shadowed One's orders.
A thousand years later, Takanuva rediscovered Metru Nui. The Matoran on Mata Nui moved back to Metru Nui and began to repair it. It was fully repaired by the Staff of Artakha. The Toa Nuva were sent to find the Ignika to save a dying Mata Nui, followed by Takanuva and the soon-to-be Toa Inika. Takanuva later returned, refused passage into Karzahni. During this time Frostelus attacked but were rebuked by Takanuva. As well, Matoran from Karzahni were sent to Metru Nui by Gali. The Toa Mahri minus Matoro later appeared, transported by their comrade. The Mahri later had to trap the Kardas Dragon. Trailing Icarax, Takanuva was attacked by a Shadow Leech sent by his quarry that was meant for Ahkmou. Helryx and Krakua rescued Takanuva who had managed to only have half his light drained. Takanuva was given a vision of the Toa Mata's past and sent by Brutaka to Karda Nui (though he landed in a pocket dimension).
The Toa Hagah arrived on the island to lift up the Coliseum and enter the core processor of Teridax. They dueled the Toa Mahri, but realized they were allies. The Hagah vanished under the Coliseum, and the Mahri were approached by Johmak to take the Heart of the Visorak to Artidax. Jaller, Hahli, and Nuparu left, forcing Johmak to knock Hewkii and Kongu out. Metru Nui was turned into a fortress by the Order of Mata Nui and soon the defenses were breached by Voporak who stole the Vahi fom Vakama. Soon after, the Brotherhood of Makuta. A battle raged, and the other Mahri later arrived. Krakua stirred up the Bohrok under Metru Nui to help attack the Rahkshi. Av-Matoran arrived followed by the Toa Nuva and Takanuva on their vehicles. The brotherhood was vanquished as Mata Nui was awakened.
A celebration was thrown in Metru Nui for the awakening of Mata Nui. When Teridax was revealed to be in control, the Turaga were imprisoned and Ahkmou was made ‘Turaga’ and set Po-Matoran to commissioning statues of Teridax. Many inhabitants hid in the Archives from a Rahkshi onslaught. Macku found Tuyet in the Archives, and showed Hafu and Kapura before leaving. The three found Tren Krom in Lewa's body and Tren Krom freed the Toa Hagah from an illusion that Mata Nui really had awakened. Tren Krom led the other three to the core processor to tell the Ignika about the Golden Armor. A fragment of Aqua Magna hit Teridax’s head, killing him and destroying much of Metru Nui. Taipu was trapped in the Archives, but freed by Macku, Tamaru, and Kopeke. Metru Nui was vacated in favor of Spherus Magna.
Landscape
Metru Nui was mainly a big city. In the center was the Coliseum that has a passage underneath it to reach the core processor.
Ta-Metru
The landscape of Ta-Metru was mainly dotted with furnaces and home to the Ta-Matoran, mask makers. The Ta-Matoran would taka Kanoka and melt them down into Kanohi. The Great Furnace was the largest of all the furnaces, and the Fire Pits provided it power along with other furnaces. Discarded Kanohi would be melted into molten protodermis.
Ga-Metru
Most of Ga-Metru was filled with schools and labs. The main feature of Ga-Metru was the Great Temple built on an island formed from dead Protocarins. A Suva is present in the temple along with, formerly, Toa Tools and a scroll detailing the steps to awaken Mata Nui.
Le-Metru
The Chute system that transported Matoran around the city was based in Le-Metru and had the most presence there. Most of the district was devoted to Chute building and testing new vehicles to ride in Chutes.
Po-Metru
The most un-city-like of all the districts, Po-Metru is filled with canyons and rocky crags. Po-Matoran created sculptures and carved things from Protodermis. There was a canyon with an entrance to a Dark Hunter prison in Po-Metru, and Matoran lived in clusters of villages and not in a cityscape. Teridax had a lair in Po-Metru.
Onu-Metru
Most of Onu-Metru is devoted to the Archives, a gigantic underground museum with exhibits on nearly everything imaginable, and with specimens of every encountered Rahi. These Rahi escaped in the earthquake resulting from Mata Nui’s fall into Aqua Magna. The rest of the district has Lightstone mines and a Dark Hunter prison.
Ko-Metru
The scholarly Ko-Matoran studied in the quiet of Knowledge Towers where speaking was forbidden. The area of Ko-Metru was very cold, and a secret section housed Keetongu for many years.
