Not the best-sounding message to send to you all, but it’s all I have.

Know that a virus is infecting Techna’s SCPU. Know that I can save the SCPU by downloading the virus into my own body. Know that in my last moments I am thinking of you, fellow Toa Techna.

Hunt down the hackers. Stop them, no matter what the cost. I know you are limited to imprisoning them because of the Toa Code in your hardware, but even so you can make their lives as hellish as possible. For me.

Good-bye.

* * *

I’m Torch, Toa of Plasma and deputy leader of the Toa Techna -- well, now leader, I suppose, as our former leader, a Toa of Electricity, Ion, died to save Techna’s mainframe. He downloaded a virus into his own body, and the massive misinformation overload killed him.

But I digress. If you are receiving this cybernet message via your brain implant, you are a denizen of Techna. Read on -- or listen on, it doesn’t matter -- for a review of our current crisis. Your help combating this threat will be invaluable.

And if you’re a hacker... well, be warned: We will find you.

* * *

HISTORY of TECHNA

Fifty years after our population of Spherus Magna, we finally gathered enough technical knowhow to examine the technology within the damaged Matoran Universe. Together with the Glatorian we copied detailed designs and brainstormed how to recreate them ourselves. I was a Matoran then, rather young compared to most; even so I helped construct the first working quantum computer.

I was also one of the first to suggest examining Matoran and Toa themselves. In doing so we discovered how to meld organic and mechanical parts together into one body. Ten years later we created the first synthetic Matoran, one of Fire.

A mere year after the first S-toran (as they were called), we (the Matoran, Toa, Glatorian, Agori, etc.) happened upon a grand plan: to take the Matoran Universe and recreate it into a grand spaceship. Some jumped for the idea; others didn’t. With what help we had, we worked for two centuries on the spaceship.

One thousand years afterward, now one hundred thousand years ago, we finished it, called “all aboard who’s going aboard,” and launched it into space. The starship was dubbed the Techna Nui.

In a large room within the spaceship Techna Nui is the city we call Techna.

During our time in space we have discovered how to create synthetic elements and Kanohi, how to create customized species, and how to link us all together using Techna’s SCPU (Supervisory Central Processing Unit), thus allowing hover-taxis to be driven automatically without crashing, and allowing the Techna Nui to fly itself through space. Now no one remembers who’s a Matoran and who’s an S-toran. I like it that way.

Just recently our SCPU was hacked. The Hackers want us floating dead in space, because they don’t believe we should be influencing the rest of the universe, insignificant as we are. The Technans believe we should continue onward. Some don’t know what to believe.

This is where you come in.

* * *

ABOUT TECHNA

There are three main districts in our space-city: the Science District, the Information District, and the Denizens District. Citizens can travel between the two as they please, via either hover-taxis or protodermis transport chutes. It’s impossible to enter offices without the proper IDF (Identification Frequency), which can be edited upon promotions and / or job switches.

All of Techna is defended by hovering Automated Defensive Robots, ADRs, armed with energy ball launchers. The robots have arms but no legs and are about as large as a Matoran. When an alarm sounds, ADRs will immediately converge on the area. So don’t try sneaking into places you can’t be. Also, various food business (as well as empty buildings reserved for food businesses) are scattered throughout both the Science and Information Districts.

SCIENCE DISTRICT

The largest of the Technan districts, the Science District’s offices deal exclusively with technological advances. Scientists work within closed chambers, working on advanced computer programs and new weapons, masks, and armor.

-Technology Tower:
This is the single manufacturing plant of Techna. It takes up the very center of the Science District, a large cubical base from which extends a skyscraper-like structure. Only scientists with the highest possible permissions may enter.

-Computer Knowledge Center:
Most of the programming for the SCPU is done within this small tower to the lower-left of the Technology Tower. Entry permissions are the same as those for the Technology Tower. It is believed the SCPU virus was uploaded from here; thus, security is doubled.

INFORMATION DISTRICT

The Information District includes many database libraries with information on everything from how to create a homemade chocolate cake to how to program in MCL (Matoran Code Language); not all libraries are accessible to the general public, however. There are also cyberprinters based here; many a Technan has gotten popular through publishing a book on the cybernet.

-Security and Defense Library:
This is accessible only to those accompanied by one of the Toa Techna. It includes a complete listing of all previous misdemeanors, including those committed before the Techna launched. It also includes complete schematics for Techna and its defenses.

HOUSING DISTRICT

This includes one hibernation chamber for every citizen. While in this hibernation chamber characters are plugged into a computer, which allows them to move about in a highly-realistic virtual bedroom they may customize any way they wish.

* * *

CHARACTER CREATION

This is the interesting part. See, it’s possible for citizens of Spherus Magna to contact us via a technology called “quantum entanglement”. Don’t know it? Look it up. We can create a body on the Techna Nui for someone and then, using quantum entanglement, download that someone’s personality into the body.

All one needs to do is fill out this form and send it to the Character Database:

Name:
Gender:
(Male / Female / None)
Species:
Kanohi:
(if applicable)
Powers:
(if applicable)
Implants:
(robotic arm, x-ray eyepiece, arm blaster, shoulder disk launcher, etc.)
Alignment:
(Hackers / Techna / Neutral)
Bio:

Note that one can’t be a Makuta, a Great Being, a member of Botar’s species, a Baterra, or any Rahi. They can, however, be a Glatorian, Toa, or any similar species; they can even create their own, within reason, of course. Kanohi not allowed are the Mask of Time, Mask of Life, Mask of Light, Mask of Shadow, Mask of Dimensional Gates, Mask of Creation, and Mask of Undeath. Certain implants may be accepted or rejected based on the approvers. Custom Kanohi and elements are allowed with approval.

Note that Techna has its own custom Kanohi and elements. In addition to the normal elements, Crystal, Nucleons (control over protons and neutrons), and Data (ability to adjust data and data flow, and act as a sentient database) also populate Techna.

Special Kanohi include the Mask of Engineering (enhances engineering abilities), Mask of Logic (speeds thought processes tenfold), Mask of Hyperspace (creates a hyperspace storage pocket), Mask of Remembrance (plants memories within other’s minds), and Mask of Time Perception (speeds up or slows down perception of time, including user).

All characters have a brain implant that allows them to communicate with others mentally, either via audio or text (like how you’re receiving this message).

This should be all the information you need to catch the hackers -- or, if you are a hacker, go to ground. It doesn’t matter who you are; know that the hackers aren’t winning this fight. At least, in my opinion.

Torch out.

GAMEPLAY and RULES

These rules are to be followed to the letter. The first two times you break the rules, you will get warnings, both in PMs and in edits to your offending RPG posts. The third and fourth times, your character will be involves in damaging mishaps that set back your roleplaying. The fifth time, you will be permanently banned from the RPG.

Remember to use IC (location goes here) before every in-character post, and OOC after every out-of-character post. For example:

IC (Science District):

“Some place,” remarked the newcomer to himself, gazing around at the buildings.

OOC: My character is open for interaction!

1. All forum rules apply.

2. No god-modding. “God-modding” is when you make your character do something ridiculously over-powered -- for example, calling an asteroid down from the heavens.

3. No auto-hitting. “Auto-hitting” is when you damage another character without giving the other player a chance to post, saying the character dodged.

4. Listen to the RPG staff. They are RPG staff for a reason. Thus you cannot disobey them without reason. The local RPG staff will be playing as the Toa Techna; you can recognize them that way.

5. Remember: You’re playing this to have fun!

IC Klax (Walking about Techna):

Klax walked down the street, around people and through mobs that blocked up whole streets and sidewalks. He ignored the people around him, he only wanted to get to his home, and rest a bit, normally, he liked using his mask to slow time down, and just watch the world go by, letting him react to the tiniest little things. This time, however, he didn't, he walked at a fast pace towards him home, he really just wanted to get some rest, and get away from the world for a while.

OOC: Open for interaction, he is.

IC Fulok (Outside Computer Knowledge center):

Fulok glared at the tower, and the dumb morons running around outside and inside it, he held a dagger up his sleeve, waiting to put it into use, with eyes just locked on the tower and the people around it. He looked away from the tower when an ADR floated up to him, and asked, "Is there a problem, sir?" and Fulok turned to it, "Wouldn't you like to know," he said, turning away and walking down the street, keeping his weapon hidden from view.

OOC: Also open for interaction.

Several thousand years ago, Torch had found a nice perch atop one of the protodermis transport chutes. The cool metal encircled the chute in a two-meter-wide band: easy to stand on, a clear twenty meters above the smaller buildings and streets. It was easier to think up here, away from the distractions of below.

Besides, it sported a spectacular view.

Away below him and to the north stretched the Science District, its brilliant lights stretching away to the opposite glass wall. There the stars glittered against the blackness of space, billions upon billions of kilometers from the Techna Nui. It always made Torch feel so... small.

But I'm not small. I'm a Toa. A Toa Techna, what's more.

His right arm automatically rose, reached around his left shoulder, gribbed the handle of the staff that was mounted on his back. The Toa of Plasma grimaced; in response, the barrel of the plasma-jet mounted on his left wrist flickered slightly.

I will catch the hackers.

Where Torch was serious and uptight 24/7, Gust was easygoing, flamboyant, and always one to mess around with friends. Of course, when the time came for one of them to be chosen as leader, everyone knew Torch would get it, but it's not like the decision didn't sting him a little-

"Thought I'd find you up here," said the Toa of Air, plopping down beside his friend with a grin.

Torch started a little, but his gaze didn't even flinch. "I knew you would," he said.

Silence.

The Techna Nui was large enough for there to be a heat difference between the various regions; and so, the Toa Techna felt a soft, none-too-chilly breeze. Torch's plasma jet flickered again, this time steadily for a full minute. The air warmed up in response.

Gust wasn't the chilliest character on the Toa Techna, nowhere near it. His mouth was big, and Torch couldn't help but wonder if his head was filled with hot air, but he was a good friend; that was more than the Toa of Plasma could say of himself.

"Let's get down," said Torch finally. "We can't hide up here forever."

The words came out a little more forcefully than Torch had intended. Ignoring Gust, he leapt down from the chute.

The air whistled by his audio receptors as he fell--

Whoosh.

His plasma jet sprang to life, jolting his arm, but he kept it steady and his fall slowed down. The buildings slid up by him; he could see several other beings staring out their windows at the sight of him floating down.

He nodded grimly.

Several meters above the ground he shut off the plasma jet -- he didn't want to harm any Technans below -- and dropped easily onto his feet. Standing up, he began to walk into the crowd, pushing his way through easily with his Toa's strength.

The Toa also shoved through a crowd, the same one, in fact, as Torch did, he pushed Matoran down, nudged Toa out of his way, and used his whole body weight to move Skakdi, causing a bit of a disturbance along the way, a Skakdi grabbed him by the shoulder, and turned him around, "HEY BUDDY, YOU DON'T SHOVE ME LIKE THA-" the fool said, but his words were met with a spiked metal fist to the face, two times in size as a normal Toa's hand. As Fulok absorbed the metal he had covered his fist in, he stared down at the Skakdi as he slowly stirred, "No, you don't touch me," he said, placing a well aimed kick at the being's stomach for emphasis on his sentence.

He looked around at the crowd, some of them were already reporting him to the ADRs, so he chose to not stick around the scene. He shoved his way through the crowd, right into an unfortunate Toa of plasma, who he shoved down onto the ground, "Watch where you're going," he said, leaping over the Toa, and running away from the mob of people. He never once wondered who he had just shoved down.

The other Toa didn't look around. The crowd around Torch was too loud, too jumbled together. He swore, looked around, saw no other Toa Techna, saw the ADRs looking in opposite directions.

Well, he'd just have to take matters into his own hands, wouldn't he?

Story of my life, he couldn't help but think.

Again he shoved through the crowd, pushing aside Matoran and Toa, shooting death-glares at any who dared to try and stare him down. The metallic street vibrated with the clangs of a multitude of footsteps.

"Man those defense towers! I want the patrols doubled again today. No one will be able to upload a virus into our great spaceship ever again!" The guards nodded and went off to protect the center. I stood firm. Ever since the SCPU virus was uploaded into Techna, chaos had erupted within the re-built robot. We were currently floating, and the effects of being a basically automated-less spaceship was pronounced. And I didn't like it. This was deception at the highest level, and I had to get to the bottom of it.

With that he released Gust's arm and ran ahead. Dodging around a couple Matoran, he came to the intersection and noticed several ADRs flying ahead of him. Good: more assistance.

Drawing his spear in an attempt to get more Technans out of his way, he ran into the center of the intersection and looked around.

The bakery, as it turned out, was one of those "sleeper" businesses, the type that didn't put out daily advertisements and relied heavily on word-of-mouth. These sorts of companies, Torch knew from studying business, could last for years. He'd seen it happen before, too; for example, the Kanoka Krispy Candy Factory over in the Information District, third quadrant.

There weren't many people inside the brightly-lit Tala's Eatery; yet the smell of the fresh bread and seasonings -- chocolate, cinnamon, sugar -- seemed irresistable. Gust ordered a few cinnamon buns. Probably saving one for later, thought Torch, beginning on his own order, a chocolate-covered crepe.

They took a table near the door; after all, they were the Toa Techa, and the closer they were to problems the quicker they could solve them.

Right now, the problem was hunger.

Torch swallowed. "Perfect ten," he said, and bit again into the crepe. Delicious.

"Yeah, well, don't get used to it." Karzahni, this crepe was good. "There's going to be a lot more of grim, dejected Torch for a while. At least, until these hackers are caught."

IC (Guard Tower of Computer Knowledge Center):

The Kyra sat in the darkness, lost in thought.

He looked somewhat like a Toa -- at least, a mutant, stooped version of a Toa. Tentacles grew from his chin, giving his head the appearance of a mollusk. Those tentacles writhed slightly, metal tendrils testing the air about the Kyra.

He... shouldn't have, he admitted to himself. It had been rash. Hacking into the SCPU was the ultimate offense; and if someone succeeded, they had a very, very large chance of screwing things up. For example, the Techna Nui's life support systems.

Next time, he decided, would be a long way off.

On the tip of his right armrest was a button. He pressed it, talked into the radio device that sat there.

"All's clear thus far, cap'n," Norah hissed through his chin tendrils. "T' be honest, I don' think any hackers'll be attackin' tonight. It's too close t' the first attempt."

"I said leave me alone, you should have listened," he said, kicking a Toa in the gut, and walking away into the shadows. He was no hacker, just a guy who had some anger built up towards the whole upper class of people that maintained Techna Nui, after all, he had been one of them before...

To Karz with them, I ran them, I fed this hunk of metal breakfast, every day, I put my heart, heh, hasn't THAT thing died, I put, no, I poured my heart into giving them everything they knew about their poor little metal world, and they threw me out like a piece of scrap. Skar: Seeing as the beta test period is almost at its end and Techna isn't the only good RPG in this contest, don't bother coming up with a story arc yet. Strike that. Techna is now official. Come up with a story arc if you'd like.

IC (Tala's Eatery):

Torch looked up sharply at Gust's words. The Toa of Air met his comrade's gaze evenly, though his normally-bright eyes had darkened a few shades. He was serious; and when he was serious, there was something to be serious about.

Namely, the Toa of Plasma sitting across from him.

Friendship. Even after one hundred thousand years of riding the Techna Nui, the concept still seemed so alien. To reach out with honesty and loyalty... it meant putting trust in someone else, someone who could easily push it away and break you in the process.

Trust. Another alien concept.

"I know, Gust." His tone adopted a hint of superior patience like we was explaining something to a novice Toa. He couldn't help it; that was how his voice sounded. "Believe me, I'm assessing my Kanohi off. But I need something -- anything! -- to look into; I... I can't do nothing." It'd kill me faster than going after hackers would, he added mentally, but he could have sworn some of the thought showed on his face.

The crepe, still warm, lay forgotten on the napkin before him. "Standing by," he said slowly, as if reciting something he'd had in his mind for a while now, "is not something I can do. I am a Toa, and I prefer to act like one."

And just like that he calmed down again. The pleasant smells of the eatery, wafting from the kitchen behind the counter, reclaimed their hold on Torch's brain. Shaking his head in some sort of gesture (even he didn't know what), he took his crepe and bit into it.

Eh. It's bit cold. Holding up his plasma jet, he activated it on a low setting, just enough to warm the crepe in several seconds. Better.

"I'm not interested in discussing this matter any further," Torch said around his crepe, and he took a bite and savored it.

You wouldn't know it by looking at him, but he was actually kind of annoyed. Normally, he was a lot more persistent.

"I'm glad you think that," I said bluntly. "But we'd look like fools not to increase security."

Sonus was running around Techna, having nothing to do he started sprinting inside the city to bear his boringness. While running around he didn't see a citizen standing by, doing some movement to evade the citizen he went flying to the floor and broke his Kanohi.
"My mask! It's broken! Ah jeez, it's the third one I have" he said as he looked at the broken shards.
He grabbed what's left of his mask and walked to a nearby Transport Chute heading to the Science District.
After a few minutes ride, the Toa of Sonics reached the Science District, and began asking around "Anybody here knows how to fix a Kanohi? Please? I'm in a bit of a hurry"

OOC: I think I can post... let me know if not.

An AI travelled in a world that defies description. A universe, in fact, that has few limits. That universe was the System. It saw the System in a way that none before it had. It saw it as an alien on a world not it's own. The AI was driven by fear. Not its own, but that of others. It fed off of that fear and grew stronger. And yet, the System would not feel fear. The AI had no power over it. So, it thought. And planned.
Zuukor, that was what I'm meant to be called.
I was created to infect the entire SYSTEM, but the HACKER that made me failed. I can be in the SYSTEM, but I don't have the power to infect it with FEAR.
FEAR, that is my purpose.
FEAR is my POWER.
My STRENGTH.
So FEAR I will be. I will cause FEAR in the beings of this place.
Even if I have to do it one by one. I feel one near me, one who's FEAR is great.
One who FEARS failure.
Toa Techna Torch:
YOUR MINE.

OOC: So I can't control Torch directly (yet Evil Grin) so I'll need you to have Torch suddenly feel a strange feeling of fear and, over time, even paranoia. And if I don't leave him soon enough... HE'S MINE. Also, please exuse my comic based ALL CAPS Tongue
Thank you and have a nice day Smile
