PROLOGUE
Lein didn’t care about the fire burning in his veins. The Agori didn’t care about the stars that flew around his eyes, taunting him to get up and chase after them. His mind was solely focused on one fact, and one fact alone:
I am going to die.
After all those years he had cheated death, cheated misfortune, it had finally caught up to him. No amount of haggling and bargaining could change that now.
He had set his doom in stone.
Now he had to face it like a man.
His friends gathered closely around him, their concerned expressions implanting themselves onto his retinas. He had never wanted this. With all his heart, he regretted the path he had chosen for himself.
And now that same heart’s beating was irregular. With every single beat, it counted down the timer to oblivion.
The pain...
He had never known it would be this painful.
I only wish...
Another convulsion racked him, sending beads of sweat tumbling down his face. His vision was blurring, unfocused and then focused.
I only wish I could see Drya once more.
With the sweat pouring down his cheeks came a single tear as he remembered...

“Look,” said Lein patiently, staring down the jungle Agori before him, “I’m not gonna settle for anything less than a pound of exsidian.” He lifted the knife and twirled it, his eyes never moving even as the dappled shadows of trees overhead shifted ceaselessly. “This is quality craftsmanship, here.”
The other Agori looked about to make a retort; but he only sighed, his shoulders dropping slightly. With a resigned expression, he took out several small exsidian nuggets and placed them on the scale. Lein nodded and smiled as the scale showed one pound.
Before the other could change his mind, Lein had swept the exsidian into a pack and placed it back into a compartment on his trading cart. “Thank you for the business.”
“Sure,” muttered the other Agori, taking the knife and examining it as he walked away. But then he stopped and looked back.
“I’ve got to say -- this is some quality craftsmanship.”
Lein grinned as he urged the Sand Stalker onwards. Who said trading was all about tricking the other person, when an honest man secured his customer’s trust?

He hadn’t traveled much farther into the village of the jungle Agori before he came to his destination.
It was a squat structure, built out of the trunk of a very large, very wide tree behind it. Its walls, unlike many other buildings nearby, were a dark brown wood -- stained, most likely. Lein halted his Sand Stalker not too far from the door and waited.
He didn’t have to wait long -- Dyra walked out before the minute was up. She smiled at Lein, a brilliant smile that had compelled him to begin dating her from the first time he’d seen it.
Dyra showed Lein the wares she had obtained: a hunting knife, some new armor, and herbs used mainly in natural remedies. Lein nodded approvingly as he looked over his girlfriend’s purchases; she could be as good a haggler as himself more often than not. Yet another reason he liked her.
“...And I managed to get it all for just four pounds of exsidian,” she finished. “I haggled for at least five minutes before we even got anywhere. It’s a nice catch, eh?”
Lein gave another approving nod.
“So how did you do? Any big sales?”
Lein shrugged and took out a pack, shaking it as he lifted it before Dyra’s eyes. A rattle -- a rather metallic-sounding rattle -- came from within. She looked around the bag to met Lein’s even gaze and grinned.
“As always,” she remarked, “you’ve done well. Five pounds, right?”
“Four and a half,” Lein corrected.
She shrugged, rolling her eyes in mock exasperation. “Sure. Four and a half.” She wrapped her arm around his shoulders and smiled. “It’ll still even out the costs I spent on obtaining those other wares.”
The sun was low in the sky off to the west, its golden rays turning golden-orange as they wafted down between the tree leaves of the forest of Bota Magna. Dyra glanced up at the orb of light and asked, “So where to now?”
“Home, I suppose.” He wrapped his own arm around Dyra’s shoulders. She grinned. “We’ll be hitting another village tomorrow -- a major one. We ought to get some sleep.”
